The object is to defeat the enemy while keeping your losses/casualties to a minimum. For example, certain battles are turn-based and you need to take certain strategic cities/towns that are highlighted with yellow hexagonal lines before the last turn. Every battle is limited to a confined/restricted number of turns between you and the opposing force. However, the video game was not without drawbacks. The game play would leave me engrossed for hours. In playing the strategy game, you try to conduct strategies in certain battles differently than they actually occurred. You actually had more control of your forces than with that 16-bit garbage Operation Europe. The sound-effects were very realistic (explosions and gun-fire) instead of that electronic synthesized garbage. It was originally a computer game, but a video game version for the Playstation followed.īy my assessment, Panzer General/ Allied General were clearly the best strategy game ever put on a video game –pending the debut of the Playstation 2.

As if by natural progression, a spin-off to Panzer General followed in the form of Allied General.

The game also enables you to play the role of the allies and the Russians. This due to the 32-bit memory space.Īs you could imagine, surviving World War Two veterans (allies/Russian) and Holocaust survivors would not approve of the idea of a person playing the role of a German leader in a strategy game. You can have as many as 20 or so units under your command and you can control the action of each of them, rather than to direct them to their objective or order them to engage –with you being in the sideline. Under your command, you have tanks, artillery, infantry, air support, navy support, and so forth. In this game, you are in command of a German military force involved in many of the battles in Europe from 1939 to 1945.

When the Playstation was touted as the “video game with the PC quality to it”, SSI took the challenge to bring one of their computer strategy games into the video game mold. Trying to put a strategy game into a game console limited to 8-bit/16-bit had to be a trying effort. Both those games were also made for Nintendo’s response to the Sega Genesis –the 16-bit Super Nintendo.

The really hard part was not having full control of the assets under your command. I found this game mediocre than Pacific Theater Operations. The game was titled Operation Europe and was not a complete success. The company that made that strategy game for the Sega Genesis had then made a spin-off game that took place in Europe. There was actually a strategy game involving World War Two in the Pacific and was titled Pacific Theater Operations. Nintendo had as many as two strategy games that I may be aware of but did not have enough memory space for more detailed graphics and the electronic music score/soundtrack was cheesy. It has to do with the amount of memory space in a video game console. This has nothing to do with 3-dimensional graphics. The difference between all three is the amount of memory space involved. The Nintendo is limited to 8-bit the Sega Genesis is 16-bit. Now before I try to get into the intricacies of the strategy game itself, I feel the need to explain the advantages between the Playstation and earlier video game consoles. That person would lead imaginary armies or fleets into battles.

In short, these computer games made a person into an arm-chair general or admiral. Most of these games involved World War Two. or SSI, as it was often referred to, was best known for making computer strategy games. When the Playstation (now known as Playstation 1 or PS1 for short) made its debut, several companies that made computer games (IBM compatible/PC) had also decided to make video game versions of those very games. Try to imagine me as a kinder, gentler version of the Angry Video Game Nerd – with apologies to James Rolfe.
